🙂 They may be cute as hell, but they annoy me to no end, always digging small holes for nuts in my lawn.

I’m not fond of them either, since they eat the birdseed meant for the birds, and they scare me when they run out in the street in front of my car, then turn around just as I think I’ve hit them, ugh, skittering off safe once again.

They leap to the pole than clamber to the feeder. I found that Vaseline on the pole needs to be frequently replenished. They can empty that feeder in a day, if I don’t stop them.

OK so we don’t have squirrels and we don’t have bird feeders but I can imagine. Sorry I haven’t been in touch for a while. I have moved from Melbourne to Ballarat and it was quite a wrench and took up a bit of my time.

I have two feeders just for the squirrels. They’ve got to eat.
And so do the hawks… (yes my hubby says I have hawk feeders!)

With trees close by and overhead, a hawk wouldn’t have easy access here. The largest bird I’ll see in the yard is a pileated woodpecker, but not very often.

I may have mentioned one winter I saw two Coopers Hawks ripping apart a squirrels nest in a willow tree… they must have been hungry. But the one squirrel got away when the hawk landed to readjust his lunch.

Is that a black squirrel or just the time of day? Some of our red squirrels have black tails but they rarely come up close to the house.

It’s a gray squirrel. Any time past noon, that area is shaded. I see red squirrels while kayaking, which is in less populated areas.
I would see black squirrels just across the gorge at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and then in parks right at the gorge edge in New York State. Anywhere else on the American side they would be gray squirrels.
This Wiki says they are mainly in Ontario and the northeast US, with a pocket in Missouri (the mid-west US), though I’ve never seen them here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_squirrel

We don’t have grey squirrels yet. The UK is infested with them and so is Italy so it’s only a matter of time before we get them too. Ironically, one of the few predators of grey squirrels in the UK is the pine marten, and they’s practically exterminated it…
