So It Seems
Receding waters tell
lies about the tears to come.
The last rays of a sky
slowly fading light
my trials. A long climb
out of darkness
waits in the coming
night of loss, without
you to guide me.
So it seemed to me when my father died, nearly twenty-five years ago.
This is my response to Thursday Photo Prompt – Dark #writephoto at Sue Vincent’s Daily Echo, with her photo.
It seems so black and white…Excellent poem on this image!

Such sadness, Ken, but very beautiful. I doubt that guiding hand left entirely…a father remains in the son, though his presence is missed.

Thank you, Sue. I like to think I carry a part of him within me.

Beautifully put. It does seem as though night has fallen, but the dawn is always there, waiting to break.

Thanks, Jane. Yes, we move on, and remembering isn’t as painful when we don’t focus on the loss. And that’s the key. Memories should not be about the loss, but about the good times.

Memories I suppose should be the whole picture, neither airbrushing out the less good times, nor exaggerating the good times. Honest, the way we knew the person.

I agree. I meant to say that focusing on “the times before” is better than focusing on the loss.

Of course 🙂 And even among the memories of ‘before’, some are dearer than others.

An elegy is perfect for this photo. We never stop missing our parents. (K)

I do think of him often, but I was surprised the photo took me in that direction.

A very touching poem, Ken. That dark night and feeling of loss–I remember. But the dawn does come, and then days after.
