Wakeup Call
At one with the peaceful nature
of my surroundings, I feel
the early morning stillness
in the air, the only sounds
my paddle as it slices the water
and my wake trailing
behind me. Ahead of me,
an Asian carp jumps
across my bow to slap me
in the face, and just like that
I am not the only fish out of water.
This is my response to Day 13 at napowrimo.net,
where the challenge is to write a poem that follows the beats of a classic joke.
This one brought a smile at the end. 🙂

You did it! Fooled me as though you said it was to the prompt, I didn’t believe you until the end. Well. done.

Wonderful description of stillness–the more discordant the fish slap!

Thank you. This actually happened to me, and I was quite startled!

A nice visual. 😀 I hope it landed in the boat.

Wouldn’t that be something. I’ve seen videos where it actually happens.
