This Fluid Connection
I’ve paddled to the middle of the Niagara River, drifted
along a sandy shore to see a green heron among watery roots,
heard egrets high in a tree call my name.
When I sat on the shore of Lake Ontario sifting pebbles
in search of beach glass, my thoughts echoed
in each wave lapping at my feet.
Even here, far from those blue waters, I sit
on a quiet stream and know all that surrounds me
is speaking to me with my voice.
I talk to the water as if to myself,
learn from my own responses.
This poem is a response to earthweal weekly challenge: THE TEEMING, although I’ve missed the Linky window for that. Also, I’m off prompt for Day 11 of napowrimo.net. On this 11th day of National/Global Poetry Writing Month, this is my 16th poem of the month.
~ Day 11 ~
You and the water are one …

Indeed, nature is a great healer .. your poetic description of how it has fulfilled you … and continues to do so, is quite lovely.

Cool concept, Ken. We share our atoms with all the rest of all. Do you know earthweal has an open link weekend that you could link this to? Unless that one is the one you are talking about…

Isn’t it true, there’s something about pebbles and water.
Lovely poem.
Well done

Thank you. Sitting on that shore and sifting small stones through my fingers to look for beach glass can be very relaxing. I’ve even “written” poetry while doing that.

The hours you’ve spent with different waterways make it easy for you to merge into their rhythms. I imagine it’s like meditation. (K)

Thank you, Kerfe. It certainly does when I’m paddling. There’s a rock overhang that is 5 to 8 feet above the water that I like to sit under. (depending on rain the space might not even be accessible) It’s so peaceful to look out at the stream.
