Broken Cycle, Whole Heart
Wrinkled, tossed, unused,
this heart had grown
a stranger to affection
until your heart took it
for a spin, rinsed away
any trace of despair,
and broke the cycle
that held it captive
with a love that is
permanent, pressed
into the pages of both
my heart and mind.
This poem is my response to Poetics: Put Your Words on Spin Cycle, the prompt from De Jackson at dVerse ~ Poets Pub, which is to write a laundry poem. She offered the option to use a list of laundry words and to include three or more words or phrases from the list.
fluff & fold
spin cycle
permanent press
wash & wear
cycle
dryer fuzz
machine wash warm
tumble dry
dry flat
presoak
wrinkled
front load
rinse
fine delicates
clothes pins
downy
tide

How perfect! Love this use of “permanent, pressed” especially.

Thank you. 🙂 The first draft also had “spin, cycled”, but I needed to split those words to arrive at the final version..

It’s always so cool how poems evolve within themselves.

Well there you go, Ken. Next year’s Valentine’s Day verse is already written. How romantic!

You put those words through the wringer, Ken, and came up with a well-pressed poem that tells a love story that broke the cycle with a happy ending.

Delightful! And the metaphors truly work – a poem for all who find themselves happily permanently pressed together with another after time left solo wrung out, on a heap of despair.

Thanks, Jazz.
This is one time when rinse and repeat doesn’t apply. 😉

Thank you, Sara. Sometimes I spend more time editing an image to get what I want than I do on the poem. But then, as with this one, sometimes I get to edit the poem in my mind as I edit the image.
