The Distance Between Us
There are no guarantees.
The definition escapes you.
No room for me,
no meaning.
Webster’s might say
otherwise,
the clue known
only to you.
Beyond this point,
there be dragons,
dogma,
a matter of politics.
Your meaning
all that matters,
my heart secondary
to the source, you.
This is my response to MTB: Lists that Google gives us, the prompt from Björn at dVerse Poets Pub, which is to start a word search at Google, following the thread from word to word to create a poem. I started with “guarantee,” which led me to “definition,” and onward. The title, “The Distance Between Us” was actually my starting point, but when that thread ran dry, I decided it still works as a title.

I like how you kept the title from that unsuccessful first attempt it works really well.

Thanks, Björn. I just followed the trail, but my head’s not in the space of the words, so I was Stuck for a title until I saw it at the top of my draft. Even then, I have no idea why I started searching with that line.

I just figured it out. I started searching with “the distance between.”

I like the title and specially this part which best describes the space between two people:
Your meaning
all that matters,
my heart secondary
to the source, you.

I liked “beyond this point there be dragons–dogma, a matter of politics.”
I took your title to also mean the spaces between the lines, the creative cherubs who buzz about dropping seeds and treacle .

Very beautiful. The last stanza packs a punch, emotionally.

Glenn there is a lot of separation going on right now. Maybe in November things will begin to smooth out. Not real hopeful but I’m trying to be.

A great closing Ken! Love the contention of what sacrifices can be evoked from. We need to give regard to good feelings to others than for ourselves!

A great poem for out time…. you are right there are no guarantees that one distance is better than others… seems everyone has their own definition.
I loved this:
Beyond this point,
there be dragons,
dogma,
a matter of politics.

Your process worked out very well and using it as a title brings the rest all that much closer.

Everything brought sharply in focus with that last line, Ken. Brilliant.

🙂 Thank you, Eugenia. I think part of that directness came from allowing Google to lead me.

Hi Ken, I’m a day late getting around to reading people’s word. You did a great job here, and yes there be dragons! In this world there are two damned mini dragons. Good riding Ken

Thanks, Rob. I’m just making the rounds, myself.
When I saw “there be dragons” I thought it was perfect for the idea of reading a person’s thoughts or intentions.

Great title! What separates us is always so illusive, it’s the realism at the end I like, and the word “source.” We have unity there.

Thank you. This works both ways (in a way). True, often more in one direction than the other. Finding that balance is key.

the title is a poem on its own, Ken.
The alliteration on this stanza is both profound and delight:
Beyond this point,
there be dragons,
dogma,
a matter of politics.
The closing stanza hits hard.

I love when writers have no idea where they ‘are going’ and then produce something amazing. Brava.

I wasn’t sure I could complete the exercise, so I surprised myself.

Oh yes! That phrase works perfectly here for the title. Especially like the last stanza!
This was an interesting prompt and, even though it’s Monday and I’m doing all my reading now, it is fascinating to see where everyone went with this!
