Open Your Heart
Must darkness
be the destiny
of the misguided?
Goodwill withheld
will only result in
continued darkness.
Open your heart
to reveal a space
you have not considered.
A hand offered
could be the first light
on a path to recovery.
This is my response to dVerse – Poetics – The Vatic Voice, the prompt from Lisa at dVerse ~ Poets Pub, in which Lisa says, “the vatic voice of a poet is one that is infused with spirit that comes from another place. That voice has been regarded by some as a sign of divine transmission and by others as a sign of madness.”
I wish I could say this advice should be universal, but, sadly, it’s not. Some do not deserve the charity they receive. Enough said.

Inertia is the greatest force in the universe. If a person can commit to taking a first step and does, it’s like climbing over a mountain to bright sunshine. When I saw your title, the song “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” came to mind. “Kindness will be your guide.”

Thank you, Lisa. My notation had included a rant of sorts, but I didn’t include it. I’ve now added words that temper that original thought.

Ken, they probably need it most of all…

I still have a problem with people who will not make an effort for themselves, instead taking advantage of others. I’m not talking about people truly in need, but I’m better off not getting into specifics.

Goodwill withheld = darkness all around.

Thanks, Ron. If only it could be applied universally, but some just don’t deserve it.

I think ‘a hand offered’ is always ‘the first light/on a path to recovery.’ I am walking that path right now, but I couldn’t do it alone.

The world, all of us, need a recovery program. We can start with ourselves. (K)

And who decides on the “deserving”
LikeLiked by 1 person
That’s a good point. I would say those directly affected. I think of myself as someone with a big heart (but then how objective am I?), but there are individuals who take advantage of generosity over and over again, yet do absolutely nothing for themselves that would resolve that dependence. I only make this observation with direct knowledge, with a specific circumstance in mind, so it was a mistake for me to even mention “deserving” when I wrote the poem from my heart to begin with.

I find it perplexing that so many people will turn a cold shoulder.
