Branches Weary
Broken shadows across the cracked ground
Season’s burden, branches weary
Tired shade already turning
As each day grows shorter
September arrives
A life well-lived
Finally
Winding
Down
This nonet is my response to Poetics: 9 across for a count down,
the prompt from Laura at dVerse ~ Poets Pub, which is to write
a nonet starting with one of four given lines from poems about September.
The line I have chosen, “Broken shadows across the cracked ground,”
is from To the Light of September, by W. S. Merwin.
Very beautiful. 🙂

Great stuff, KG. I was reluctant about this challenge, but ended up using the same lines from Merwin in mine (a nonet in reverse). I guess we’ll all be shadows soon, eh?

Thanks, Ron. I think I’ve had too many reminders of mortality, lately. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.

Yup, many of us are in the Winter of our years, everything encountered daily reminds us of our mortality.

I thought about using the same line you have chosen. You did an excellent job with it. September is here and autumn arrives next week. sigh

So enjoyed this. For something so brief, there’s a lot in these nine lines – the season’s weariness, a life lived and now winding down – and the shape of the poem on the page, the lines shrinking down to that last word.

Ken you did this beautifully. That’s how I see summer at this time of year – “weary” and “ a life well-lived”. ☺️

“A life well-lived finally winding down” I was born in September, this year I celebrate the last of the 70s! I feel time passing more quickly than I thought possible. Yet I feel as energized as I did in my youth, ready for more. I love this poem.

Closer to 70 than 60, I’ve always insisted on thinking “young.”

I think death can be both devastating and sometimes as going to sleep after a very long day.

Love that you positioned those last three words to fit their meaning.
