Taking Note
I stop for a moment,
even as I begin, fingers pressing
strings, and fret over the possibilities,
take note of the heartbeat sounding
through the delicate wood
pressed closely against me.
What better music could come
from a beginner with a life already lived?
This is a response to Quadrille #82 – Fretboard of Poetry, the prompt from Kim at dVerse, which is to use the word fret in a 44-word poem that does not require meter or rhyme.
That’s an excellent ambiguous title and phrase, Ken, ‘taking note’! I love the ‘heartbeat sounding through the delicate wood’, whether it belongs to a beginner or an accomplished player.

What better life indeed? We all make music in our own way. I play the violin.

I like the idea you used here of beginner as a relative term.

Yes, but will it make my fingers longer? 😉

Beginner’s mind…I like the image of closeness with the wood, continuing the closeness that the maker of the instrument felt. (K)

Great title! And oh yes….when the instrument is held…and fingers pour in notes….the heartbeat of the instrument is revealed.
