The prompt for Carpe Diem #1614 Tan Renga – freestyling is to write a two-line response to a favorite haiku, creating a tanka. The haiku I have used (in blue),
written by Matsuo Bashō, was translated by Jane Reichhold, and is taken from her book,
Bashō, The Complete Haiku. What appeals to me about the original is the reference to transition and the possibility it holds.
east or west
the same elegance
in autumn winds
Bashō
farewell in rustling beauty
leaves falling to be reborn
