In the photo for Thursday Photo Prompt: Faraway #writephoto at Sue Vincent’s Daily Echo, I see depth and distance. I have no other explanation for the poem that follows.
Ever Deeper, Ever Darker
Your path lies in a distance
deeper than the farthest reaches of the horizon.
How to follow, when your course knows no direction
other than an ever-widening spiral that leads back on itself?
The closer we become,
the higher the walls between us.
Do you miss the company, or revel in the solitary
nature of canyons ever in darkness?
I want to know you in the light of a sun
that does not set even before it rises.
You would have that sun never be,
widening the distance between us until I no longer want to follow.

Every line has depth and meaning, though together they speak of mystery and require thought. Wonderful, Ken.

I like how the relationship between the narrator and whoever he is talking about, is really open. It could be at any time or place. The photo looks other worldly to me. The poem could be taken literally as well as metaphorically (in my imagination anyway). 🙂

Thank you, Merrill. I hadn’t decided on the relationship as I wrote this, but I did think about someone being tapped out trying to cope with another’s depression. I just let the picture take me .

The spaces between…how to lead and how to follow? How to know even within ourselves where we are going? Words as full of mystery as the photo. (K)

Thank you, Kerfe.
Yes, I think the poem is very easily open to interpretation.

I read into this the struggle with intimacy. A therapist once told me that all relationships have a wall – one issue that is insurmountable. We crave the closeness and yet we fear it. Beautifully written.

That’s a good point on relationships. Even when frank and intimate, we have thoughts that live inside us, alone.

Beautiful poem. Strikes a chord with me – others’ secrets (walled off) cast darkening shadows though I’d prefer open sun shining continuously unobstructed.

Thank you.
We like to think we know those close to us.
And while there are things we like to keep to ourselves, sharing them may be what we need to maintain stability – or perhaps to achieve it.

Patience and trust can thin walls to the point of crumbling … over time. Sadly, for many time runs out before walls come down.

Thank you. It is haunting, isn’t it, when you realize you can never really know someone?

Indeed.. I sometimes wonder how it is that people (most of them anyway) can be so unpredictable 😬 their mood swings in particular are like whiplash 🤦🏻♀️

i felt like the more people know us the more defensive we can get. love the photo, it does inspire one’s heart to reach for something out there.

Opening ourselves to others is hard enough to begin with. There is only so much we’re willing to share.

I think the roads we have to walk are always too dark… but every now and then we find a light to guide us.
