This is my response to Jane Dougherty’s A Month with Yeats: Day Five (each day a new Yeats quote).

“And like a sunset were her lips,
A stormy sunset on doomed ships;
A citron colour gloomed in her hair,” W.B. Yeats

      • I know it’s very simplistic, but yours seems like an economy that started out with none of the feudal baggage of Europe, a huge workforce willing to work for not much as long as they were fed and housed, and a huge space to colonize. It was an economy geared to rapid expansion and everybody benefited from it. Now it’s slowing down. You have people who can’t find jobs too, people who can’t pay their bills, but you don’t have the social safety nets that European socialists have put in place to stop ordinary people being poverty-stricken people. It’s that every man for himself mentality that seems so wrong to anyone brought up with the welfare state.
